Established in 1611, the University of Santo Tomas (UST) is the oldest extant institution of higher learning in the Philippines. Our walk will take us the school’s famous landmarks - declared National Cultural Treasures - starting with the Arch of the Centuries, the Benavides Monument , the U.S.T. Main Building and the Central Seminary. We will also visit University Museum of Arts and Sciences (1871) with its eclectic collection of paintings, natural specimens, colonial objets d’arts and historical memorabilia. In the afternoon, we head off to visit the fascinating Chinese Cemetery- with its unique tombs and grand mausoleums- a veritable city of the dead!

This Santorini inspired museum located in the heart of Antipolo City, exhibits a combination of contemporary Filipino Paintings, native arts, and sculptures that come set in serene tropical gardens and whitewashed, Mediterranean-style villas.

This workshop aims to experiment with three different decorative surface techniques on ceramic forms: underglaze transfers, underglaze drawing and painting, plus relief modelling. The proverbial 'form over function vs. function over form' will be highlighted, as we discuss the intersection of craft and design. Participants will have opportunity to practice the three techniques, then take home their work from mid-morning, Sunday.

The traditional Indonesian technique of Batik will give you a chance to slow down as you explore the properties of wax applied on cloth. Tracing the design by applying liquid hot wax will ask for patience and perseverance. Your piece will come to life when you paint the uncovered areas with bright, watery textile dye, revealing white outlines previously made with wax. This technique is adaptable for students in grades 5 to 12 and will challenge them to embrace the unpredictability of designing with wax. Reservation Required (Yes)
This workshop is designed for any art teacher with an emphasis on the secondary classroom. It will cover the basic fundamentals that all artists must understand in order to create in charcoal. I will share my experiences with charcoal in the middle and high school setting. This course is for all levels, beginning to advanced, and it will cover topics such as still life, composition, values, relationships, measurement, perspective, mechanics, design and techniques. Participants will have an opportunity to create their own pastel painting, which will be turned into an animation using layering in DoInk Animation, GreenScreen, Keynote and iMovie. iPads will be provided, but it is recommended to bring your own. Through my years as a teacher I have met many teachers who have lost touch with their own artistic practice. This workshop will demonstrate how I maintain my own practice despite being a full time teacher, parent, spouse... and hopefully encourage you to keep up with yours. Participants will make an artwork of their own using portable art materials including; paper, acrylic, marker, and embroidery.

Katie and I will share various activities and strategies for self-care practice through the accessibility of “art as therapy”. This workshop will introduce key points on creating healthy boundaries, work-life balance, importance of mental health wellness, creating a self-care plan, and the use of Mandalas, Music and Movement with Intuitive art making, and Mindfulness Art Therapy practices. A lot of social concerns are happening in the world that often feel far from where we are. Let's take a look at how we can address the UN Sustainable Development Goals at all levels through art, address local and global concerns and foster cultural appreciation in the art room. In this session we will view a variety of projects that address social change and create art to encourage social change. We will use printmaking techniques that can be incorporated as early as elementary and paint directly on masks for fine dust to address air quality concerns in the region. Let's exchange ideas on how to encourage social change and incorporate service learning in the classroom through art!
This workshop will explore why Art Education must pay close attention to neuroscience, climate change, and creativity. It also explores why Art Education must lead the way in developing creative and responsible XXI century citizens. Using and combining different recycled materials and integrating a variety of artistic techniques, teachers will be encouraged to identify creative solutions for current issues. Ral Arrogante is a self-taught artist and a businessman and is presently the Head of the Society of Philippine Sculptors (SPS). He is known for his scrap metal wind-driven sculpture depicting ecological subjects. Ral is also a former officer of the Art Association of the Philippines (AAP) and he commits himself in sharing his talent and know-how with young artists and children in depressed communities. Ral uses available recycled materials such as plastic film sheets, illustration boards, corrugated cartons, copper metal sheets, soft drinks can, etc. This session covers his introduction into mobile making and with the aid of photos and simple tools he uses to finish an artwork, he will deliver a demonstration on how he creates a piece of work.

His images have appeared in many publications worldwide, including several cover pages for Asian Geographic and calendars for UNICEF. Join Manny as he shares his inspirational journey from educator to full time practitioner.
In this workshop you'll be offered the opportunity to create an artwork using crayons on sandpaper. Be creative with your designs. It’s an easy way to wear an original piece done by yourself or by your students. Once finished, the design can be transferred onto a t-shirt by heating the back of the sandpaper using an iron.
Working directly from nature without the aid of technology is quite rare amongst contemporary image makers. The filter, of say, a computer screen when considered can bring about important questions that can help transform a piece for the better. Consider the historical context of that particular discipline and observe how it functions optically. Using a still found image as a starting point, attendees will be asked to isolate moments and produce a 2-dimensional sketch. The sketch will then be transformed 3 dimensionally and finally converted once more into a final finished 2D piece.
One of the most vibrant medium an artist can use as well as a very therapeutic approach in art are Soft and Oil Pastels. You will learn new techniques in this medium and experience on-the-spot sketching using still- life models with both Oil and Soft Pastels. The workshop will inspire you to experiment further with your techniques, using this medium on various materials.
